Bullet ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The theme of this year’s conference was the importance of narrative and story in the lives of forensic patients and other offenders.

Forensic patients are surrounded by descriptions of their transgressions, from depositions and psychiatric court reports, to police statements and newspaper articles outlining sensationalist accounts of their crimes. Once engaged in therapy further narratives emerge, including their own accounts of their motivations, histories, reasons and fantasies, and the therapists’ expositions of the offences, and of the tale of therapy itself. Visual narratives may emerge many forms, including artwork, self-harm scarification, photographs of the offender’s victims and become one aspect of the complex picture of the trajectory of transgression. Dramatic reconstructions, repeated enactments and serial offences act out these destructive narratives. Somewhere within the narrative structure truth and fantasy converge and one of the tasks of the forensic psychotherapist is to disentangle these and uncover the meaning at the heart of an offence, distorted and violent as it might be. The conflicting narratives of expert witnesses and miscarriages of justice are among the topics we addressed.

We invited delegates to consider the different narratives of offending and trauma that they hear and construct in the psychotherapeutic treatment of forensic patients. Presentations are invited on the theme of narratives. Keynote speakers include practitioners from psychotherapy, criminology and the arts.  The conference started on 25th March with a study day on the work of Isabel Menzies Lyth.
